ITEM 110-1004-R0101       Approval of Proposal to Convert the Certificate in Surgical Technology to an Associate of Applied Science Degree, College of Technology; The University of Montana-Missoula

 

THAT:                                ��� The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes the College of Technology of The University of Montana-Missoula to convert the present Certificate in Surgical Technology to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology. 

 

EXPLANATION:                � The need to expand the Surgical Technology program is evidenced by input from the Surgical Technology program advisory committee and (national) Association of Surgical Technologists.  The advisory committee has voiced concerns regarding the expanded role of the surgical technologist and recommended the program be reviewed and, if necessary, updated to assure program content addresses this expanded role.  Further, this expanded role has been recognized by the (national) Association of Surgical Technologists via a proposed associate degree program model from the association�s educational consultant services program.
