March 22-23, 2001
ITEM 110-2851-R0301 Approval
of Proposal to Add a Medical Transcriptionist Certificate Program at Montana
State University—Great Falls College of Technology
THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorize Montana
State University—Great Falls College of Technology to award a certificate to
any student who completes the required Medical Transcriptionist curriculum.
EXPLANATION: Montana State University—Great
Falls College of Technology has an established Associate of Applied Science
degree program in Medical Transcription.
In requesting authorization to add this certificate program to its
offerings, Montana State University—Great Falls College responds to industry
and regional demands. There is
currently a high demand in Montana and in the nation for medical
transcriptionists, a demand that is increasingly being met by transcriptionists
working from their homes. At the same
time, with the current difficulties in the agricultural industry, rural
Montanans need opportunities for new or supplemental careers that they can
engage in from their homes. The
proposed one-year certificate program in Medical Transcription will be
delivered on-line to provide training for place-bound students who may choose
to work as transcriptionists from their homes.
