TO:                   Montana Board of Regents

FROM:              Roger Barber, Deputy Commissioner for Academic & Student Affairs

RE:                   Level II Submissions

Montana Board of Regents’ policy states that “. . .(C)ertificate or Associate Degree programs may be placed on submission at any Board of Regents’ meeting.  They will be placed on action agendas at subsequent meetings.”  This memorandum contains information about proposed certificates and two-year degree programs at some of the campuses.  The proposals will be reviewed by the academic officers at this meeting, and will be moved to the action agenda of the Montana Board of Regents at subsequent meetings.

The new program proposals are as follows:

Montana State University-Great Falls College of Technology:

Flathead Valley Community College:

  • ITEM 126-301-R0305:  Flathead Valley Community College has asked for authority to make its program in Surgical Technology an official part of the degree and program inventory.  Flathead Valley Community College received permission to offer a Certificate in Surgical Technology, on a temporary basis, in July 2003.  That temporary approval expires in July 2005, however, so the institution has initiated the formal Level II process to continue the program.  This new request does ask the Board of Regents to change the previously approved certificate credential to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology.    Request    Summary   Proposal    Budget    Attachment

  • ITEM 126-302-R0305:  Flathead Valley Community College has asked for authority to make the Certificate program in Medical Coding an official part of its degree and program inventory.  Flathead Valley Community College received permission to offer the Certificate credential, on a temporary basis, in July 2003.  That temporary approval expires in July 2005, however, so the institution has initiated the formal Level II process to continue the program.    Request    Summary    Proposal

Dawson Community College:

  • ITEM 126-201-R0305:  Dawson Community College has requested permission to change its Associate of Applied Science degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling to an Associate of Arts degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling.  Ordinarily, Associate of Arts degrees carry no designation of field of study.  According to Montana Board of Regents’ Policy 301.12, section 3, however: “In rare cases, there may be reason to permit . . .designation of field of study with the associate of arts or associate of science degree title.”  Dawson Community College is claiming one of those rare cases, and has submitted documentation to support its request.    Request    Summary    Proposal    Attachment 1    Attachment 2    Attachment 3    Attachment 4    Attachment 5
