Deputy Commissioner for Academic & Student Affairs Selected

Helena -- A national search for the deputy commissioner of academic and student affairs came to a conclusion today when Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns announced her selection.

‘Dr. Sylvia Moore accepted the position of deputy commissioner of academic and student affairs and will assume this role on September 15,’ said Commissioner Sheila Stearns. The deputy commissioner position, currently held by Dr. Roger Barber, reports to the Commissioner of Higher Education and is charged with leading system-wide efforts related to student services and academic programs. Barber, a thirty-year veteran of the university system, is retiring at the end of June.

Sylvia Moore‘I'm excited about the opportunity to join the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education and work with campus leaders and faculty in the Montana University System,’ said Moore, currently the Director of WWAMI Medical Education at the University of Wyoming. ‘I look forward to the challenges that the position offers, and I’m eager to begin working on system initiatives related to research and graduate education, financial aid, and transferability.’ 

Stearns said, ‘We are extremely fortunate to find someone with Sylvia’s academic and leadership background. She will be called on to work with the Board of Regents and the campuses to ensure quality academic offerings and improve services to meet the needs of students. Sylvia is an experienced administrator who will be a huge asset to the university system.’

In addition to her position as Director of WWAMI Medical Education, Moore also serves as Assistant Dean in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington.  Prior to her current appointments, Dr. Moore served as a clinical faculty member and educator at the Family Medicine Residency Program in Cheyenne, WY. Moore holds a PhD. in Education, a master’s of art in adult education, and bachelor’s of science in dietetics all from the University of Wyoming.
