ITEM 127-1013-R0505��������������� Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences Upon Rudy A. Gideon; The University of Montana-Missoula

 

THAT:�������������������������������������� Rudy A. Gideon, after thirty-five years of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor of Mathematical Sciences Emeritus.

 

EXPLANATION:����������������������� Rudy received a Ph.D. Statistics from the University of Wisconsin in 1970.� He came to the University of Montana as an Assistant Professor in September 1970.� He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974 and Full Professor in 1979.

 

Rudy has taught a broad range of statistics courses for the department, from large lecture service courses to advanced graduate seminars.� He has worked hard to develop our course on probability, for students preparing to study statistics.� For the past seven years, he has designed and presented our specialized mathematics course for students in the School of Journalism, Numbers in the News.� His research has led to talks and papers on non-parametric correlation, and he has served as a reviewer for papers in statistical journals.� He was instrumental is securing the funding for a large endowment that supports scholarships for mathematics students at the university.� Rudy has been a consultant for many projects around Montana, he has directed the work of over twenty graduate students, and he served as principal investigator on a federal grant.

 

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is happy to recommend Professor Rudy A. Gideon for Emeritus status.
