ITEM 127-113-R0505 Revisions to Admission Requirements; in-state undergraduates and out-of-state undergraduates.

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education approves the following changes to Policy 301.1, Admission requirements; in-state undergraduates; and Policy 301.2, Admission requirements; out-of-state undergraduates:

(1)           adjust the SAT score for admission to Montana State University-Northern and The University of Montana-Western from 960 to 1,440; and

(2)           adjust the SAT score for admission to Montana State University-Billings, Montana Tech of The University of Montana, Montana State University-Bozeman and The University of Montana-Missoula from 1,030 to 1,540.

EXPLANATION: The SAT examination was changed this year. It now includes three sections focusing on mathematics, critical reading and writing. Each section is worth 800 points, for a total of 2,400 points. The old SAT test had two sections worth 800 points each, for a total of 1,600 points.

Since the SAT examination is one of several alternatives that students can use to satisfy admission to the four-year campuses of Montana University System, the threshold score needs to be adjusted to reflect the new test and scoring standards. After discussing several alternatives with campus representatives, a proportional adjustment seems to be the best way to make the change.

The specific changes to both Policy 301.1 and Policy 301.2 are attached to this item.
