ITEM 127-114-R0505 Undergraduate Degree Requirements; Revisions

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education approves the following changes to Policy 301.11:

(1)           addition of language that defines the purpose and characteristics of the Bachelor of Applied Science degree;

(2)           deletion of language that is outdated and no longer necessary.

EXPLANATION: One of the suggestions in the performance audit on Transfer of Credit practices in the Montana University System, which was released in December 2004, concerned the Bachelor of Applied Science degree. The audit report said: Since no policy defines or guides the BAS programs, each unit that offers a B.A.S. program handles the transfer of coursework within the A.A.S. degree differently.

This policy revision was prepared in response to that suggestion. The revision is not one of the formal recommendations growing out of the audit. But it was prepared by the work group on A.A.S. degrees to satisfy one of the concerns identified by the performance audit team.

The proposed policy revision was shared with faculty representatives throughout the System, the chief academic officers, the chief student affairs officers, Regent Kala French and her student colleagues, and the members of MACRAO, which is made up of admissions and registrar representatives from throughout the System.

The policy will be effective immediately upon adoption by the Montana Board of Regents.
