ITEM 127-2002-0505����������������� Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Animal and Range Sciences upon Don D. Kress; Montana State University-Bozeman

 

THAT:�������������������������������������� Upon the occasion of the retirement of Don Kress from Montana State University, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana.

 

EXPLANATION:����������������������� Don Kress received his B. S. degree (Animal Science) from the University of Idaho in 1964 and his M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in Animal Science and Genetics from the University of Wisconsin in 1966 and 1969, respectively.� He was a NIH Postdoctoral Fellow in Cell Biology at the University of Minnesota for a year.� He then joined the faculty of Montana State University in the department of Animal and Range Sciences in 1970 as Assistant Professor.� He developed a program of teaching and research in beef cattle genetics and animal breeding.� He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1975.� In 1980 he was promoted to Professor in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences.� He served as Interim Associate Dean and then Associate Dean of Academic Programs from 1999-2005 in the College of Agriculture.

 

During his years of service at Montana State University, Dr. Kress has taught courses in livestock genetics and beef cattle science and conducted research on the genetics of efficiency, individual performance, and maternal ability of beef cattle, sheep, and alpaca.� He published over 200 scientific and technical papers and 100 abstracts on his original research.� He received the Outstanding Teacher Award in the College of Agriculture and the Teaching Excellence Award from the MSU Alumni and Bozeman Chamber of Commerce.� He has been an invited speaker in the U. S., Canada, Spain, Peru, Argentina, and the state of Montana.� He received the prestigious Rockefeller Prentice Memorial Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics from the American Society of Animal Science for outstanding animal genetics research.

 

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Don D. Kress the rank of Professor Emeritus of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University wishes him well for many years in the future.
