Program Summary

The University of Montana Missoula has a long history of commitment to environmental stewardship which was formalized in 2002 when President George Dennison signed the Talloires Declaration and created the Sustainable Campus Committee. In 2007, President Dennison became one of the charter signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment that put UM on the path to reducing green house gas emissions. The University’s first Green House Gas Inventory was completed in 2008 and the Office of Sustainability, directed by a full-time Sustainability Coordinator, is leading the development of a Climate Action Plan that involves campus and Missoula communities in strategizing green house gas reduction measures.

UM’s sustainability program includes long-standing academic curriculum, resource-conscious operations, community outreach, and student involvement.

Academic Programs

  • Climate Change Studies Minor - one of the nation’s first undergraduate degree programs devoted to global climate change.
  • Associate of Applied Science Degree in Energy Technology prepares students for green jobs.
  • PEAS (Program in Ecological Agriculture and Society) Farm provides students hands-on experience in urban, organic farming and food supply.
  • Green Thread Faculty Workshop was initiated in May, 2009 to infuse sustainability across the curriculum.

Operations

  • Dining Services Farm-to-College program brings local food to campus - 15% of food served is from Montana vendors.
  • New buildings are required to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certified. The Native American Center will be the first on campus.
  • Facilities Services recently completed energy audits of 15 buildings and implemented energy conservation measures such as ground-water cooling.
  • ASUM Transportation provides student-operated buses, bike rentals, free access to local bus line, education, and improved bike/pedestrian routes.

Student Involvement

  • UM Climate Action Now is an organization of more than 50 interdisciplinary students active in creating a sustainable campus.
  • The Forum for Living with Appropriate Technology (FLAT) provides students an experiential sustainable living learning opportunity.
  • Renewable Energy Loan Fund (RELF) is a student-driven revolving loan fund.
  • Student-funded recycling program diverts 20% of the solid waste stream from the landfill and employs students and a full-time recycling coordinator.
