ITEM 107-1016-R0500������ Resolution Concerning the Retirement of Walter E. Hill, Professor of Biochemistry, College of Arts and Sciences; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT:� ��������������������������������� Walter E. Hill, Professor of Biochemistry, in his 31 years of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title, Professor of Biochemistry Emeritus.
EXPLANATION:�������� �������� Walter E. Hill�s distinguished career at The University of Montana began in 1969.� He has provided 31 years of continuous service, first in the Department of Chemistry and later in the Division of Biological Sciences when it formed in 1988.� He served as Associate Dean of the Graduate School in 1978-79 and was Director of the Montana Center of Excellence in Biotechnology during 1988-96.�
Professor Hill contributed fundamentally during his career to enhancing the research profile of The University of Montana. He did so both through the development of an internationally visible research program in ribosome biochemistry and through his dedication to and leadership of institutional initiatives, including guiding the University�s EPSCoR program in 1993-2000.� Professor Hill was responsible for attracting nearly $11 million in external funding to the University throughout his career.� His research in ribosome structure and function has been described in numerous journal articles, book chapters, and two books; he also authored a non-technical book on genetic engineering.� Professor Hill�s research accomplishments have been recognized in many ways, including The University of Montana�s Distinguished Scholar Award in 1987.� Dr. Hill is an exceptional and rigorous teacher.� His research program has provided fertile ground for the education of 16 doctoral and 20 masters degree graduate students.
In recognition of his accomplishments and meritorious service, the Division of Biological Sciences recommends Professor Walter E. Hill for Emeritus status.
