ITEM 102-1505-R0399  Approval of Proposal to Change the Name of the Engineering Science Major of Both the Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree to Engineering; Montana Tech of The University of Montana

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Montana Tech of The University of Montana to change the name of the Engineering Science Major of both the Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree to Engineering.

EXPLANATION: Over the past 20 years, the number of Engineering Science degree programs has decreased from 21 to 13 and the number of Engineering degree programs has increased from 20 to 27. A definite trend exists to re-name "general engineering" programs like Montana Tech's Engineering, instead of the present name Engineering Science. Potential employers confuse the Engineering Science name, thinking of it as Engineering Technology with a vocational degree instead of a Bachelor's degree. Changing the name of the major to Engineering will clarify this. The core courses of the major will emphasize the general nature of the Engineering degree.
