ITEM 102-1901-R0399 Approval of Proposal to Add an Associate of Applied Science Degree for Correctional Officers; Helena College of Technology of The University of Montana

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Helena College of Technology of The University of Montana to award an Associate of Applied Science Degree to any student who completes the two-year curriculum for Correctional Officers as approved by the Board.

EXPLANATION: This joint project between the Montana Department of Corrections and the Helena College of Technology will develop a formal two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree for Correctional Officers. Students will receive much of the coursework via distributed learning on site at the correctional facilities. This delivery mode will accommodate remoteness, shift work, and limited student financial resources.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree will transfer directly into Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) Degrees at five Montana four-year colleges. The University of Montana, Western Montana, Montana Tech, MSU-Billings, and MSU-Northern each have Regents-approved BAS Degrees accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.

This proposed two-year occupational program will meet the needs of Montana communities and conforms to the mission of the Helena College of Technology of The University of Montana.
