ITEM 106-2701-R0300 Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor of English Emeritus upon Dr. James W. Healey; Montana State University-Billings

WHEREAS, Professor James W. Healey completed a distinguished teaching career of 28 years, including 24 years at Montana State University-Billings, formerly Eastern Montana College;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey served the profession of English in a number of leadership roles on the national, state, and local levels, as well as internationally;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey served his colleagues and the University by serving as the Chair of the Department of English;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey shared his expertise not only with students, but also with fellow teachers and other interested individuals through the publication of a number of articles in a variety of journals;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey served the University and his colleagues as member and chair of a number of campus committees, including the University Rank and Tenure Committee;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey was a member of a number of professional organizations and presented papers at national and international conferences;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey shared his enthusiasm for learning with students at Comenius University in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, where he was a Fulbright lecturer for two years;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey served Montana statewide by hosting two radio programs, "Ear Today," and "Cabin Company," on KEMC;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey served the state of Montana by spearheading a number of projects to foster HIV/AIDS awareness or to assist those afflicted with HIV/AIDS, including hosting a weekly television program, "Yellowstone AIDS Project Through New Eyes" and writing a column for the Eastern Montana Catholic Diocese newspaper, The Harvest, on HIV/Aids issues;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey served the campus population by helping to organize the Montana State University-Billings Lambda Alliance and served as the organization's faculty advisor;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey received an award from Governor Marc Racicot on World AIDS Day 1994 in recognition of his work on behalf of volunteer organizations working with HIV/AIDS;

WHEREAS, Dr. Healey has been the recipient of two Excellence in Teaching Awards (1977 and 1993) and has been named a Distinguished Professor in the area of Community Service (1995);

WHEREAS, Montana State University-Billings wishes to honor Dr. Healey for his outstanding service to education, to the community of Billings, and to the state of Montana;

THEREFORE, the Board of Regents of Higher Education, on the recommendation of Montana State University-Billings, confers upon Dr. James W. Healey the title of Professor of English Emeritus, with all rights, privileges, and responsibilities pertaining thereto.
