THAT:   Fred W. Reed, Professor of Sociology, in his twenty-fifth year of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of The Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor of Sociology Emeritus.

EXPLANATION: A native son, Dr. Fred Reed earned his B.A. from The University of Montana in 1965. After serving honorably in the United States Army and as a member of the Peace Corps, he went on to earn both an M.A. and Ph.D. degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His first appointment was as the associate director of the University of Chicago's Community and Family Study Center. In that capacity he coordinated the training of graduate students from around the world in international development programs.

Coming to the University after his outstanding work in international work to join the Sociology faculty in 1976, he served as founding director of the Social Science Research Laboratory--a facility serving the learning and research needs of students and faculty from six departments at The University of Montana. Professor Reed is a devoted and effective teacher, often taking overloads in the course of his career. He has guided special projects of countless undergraduate students and directed the thesis research for many graduate students. His own thorough training and scholarly accomplishments have served University students well.

His scholarly work, while frequently published in highly prestigious professional journals, has always reflected his interest in and commitment to applied projects. In addition to foreign governments and international agencies, his applied research has helped inform policy for numerous county and State agencies.

Professor Reed has played a crucial role in guiding affairs of his department, which he has recently chaired. A true citizen of The University of Montana, he has served on numerous major committees, on the Faculty Senate, and on the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. Professor Reed's career at The University of Montana has exemplified the highest of moral qualities: generosity, high mindedness, fairness, and personal warmth. He has set a fine example for both his colleagues and his students.

The Department of Sociology proudly recommends Professor Fred W. Reed for Emeritus status.
