College of Arts and Sciences

Fine Arts Department

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

1. Briefly describe the proposed new program. Please indicate if it is an expansion of an existing program; a new program; a cooperative effort with another institution, business, or industry; or an on-campus or off-campus program. Attach any formal agreements established for cooperative efforts.

The University of Montana-Western proposes to add an option in Visual Arts to its Bachelor of Arts degree. There currently exist the courses needed to offer a B.A. Option in Visual Arts. The offering of such a degree option has several advantages. One, it allows students interested in studio based visual arts, but unsure of their interest in Art Education, to attend UM-Western in a clear program of study. Two, since the curriculum of the B.A. Option in Visual and the B.S. Secondary Education Major in Art are very similar, students could switch between degrees with little difficulty. This allows for some flexibility as students progress in their academic career and would aid retention since students would not have to transfer in order to get different degree options. Third, when coupled with the Related Area of Crafts, the B.A. Option would allow UM-Western to market an art degree with unique studio options within our region. Fourth, when coupled with the Related Area in Business, visual art students would gain important real world business skills to complement their artistic skills (a combination many regional art programs dont offer).

2. Summarize a needs assessment conducted to justify the proposal. Please include how the assessment plan was developed or executed and the data derived from this effort.

Western visual arts faculty have had a number of students in recent years who have expressed a desire to have a visual arts degree program that does not include either secondary education or the performing arts as a mandatory component of their degree. The visual arts faculty therefore developed a degree option utilizing entirely existing coursework to satisfy this need. The degree option is for students interested in a studio arts, art related careers, or graduate school. When taken with the Related Area: Business, students will have the art and business skills needed for marketing ones own artwork, operating a gallery, working at an Art Museum, or working at an Arts Administration and Arts Advocacy position. When taken with the Related Area: Crafts, students will combine broad artistic ability and understanding with skills in media popular in the current crafts renaissance.

3. Explain how the program relates to the Role and Scope of the institution as established by the Board of Regents.

Western offers a variety of visual art courses to support its B.S. in Secondary Education, B.S. in Elementary Education and B.A. Arts option. The campus has a long history of art programs, excellent art faculty and facilities.

4. Please state what effect, if any, the proposed program will have on the administrative structure of the institution. Also indicate the potential involvement of other departments, divisions, colleges, or schools.

This program will have no effect on the administrative structure of the campus and minimal effect on the enrollment in courses taught by other academic units.

5. Describe the extent to which similar programs are offered in Montana, the Pacific Northwest, and states bordering Montana. How similar are these programs to the one herein proposed?

This program differs from other Visual Arts programs in Montana and the region in that it has a core of visual arts coursework that can be combined with a number of different related areas to address the individual educational needs of the student. While the program is unique in this regard, most of the courses used in the program are taught at other campuses in Montana and the region.

6. Please name any accrediting agency(ies) or learned society(ies) that would be concerned with the particular program herein proposed. How has this program been developed in accordance with the criteria developed by said accrediting body(ies) or learned society(ies)?

There are no specialized accrediting agencies that will be concerned with this program. The program would meet all requirements of the regional accrediting organization, the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NASC).

7. Prepare an outline of the proposed curriculum showing course titles and credits. Please include any plans for expansion of the program during its first three years.
