ITEM 114-1006-R0302   Addition of Option in Forensic Anthropology to the Master of Arts Degree in Anthropology; The University of Montana-Missoula

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes The University of Montana to add an option in Forensic Anthropology to the Master of Arts degree in Anthropology.

EXPLANATION: The University of Montana offers the only Master of Arts degree in Anthropology with a specialty in physical anthropology in the State. Students increasingly express interest in the forensic sciences, in general, and Forensic Anthropology, in particular. The Department of Anthropology has added new courses to serve these students and has experienced growth in the number of students with interest in Forensic Anthropology. Students often indicate a desire to pursue a graduate option in Forensic Anthropology similar to the Cultural Heritage option. Professionals in the field of the forensic sciences express their belief that students have an advantage when it comes to employment if they actually have a notation on their transcript that says "Forensic Anthropology."
