ITEM 122-2004-R0104��������������� Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Extension upon John Maki; Montana State University-Bozeman


THAT:�������������������������������������� Upon the occasion of the retirement of John Maki from Montana State University, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System and the people of the State of Montana.


EXPLANATION:����������������������� John Maki graduated from Montana State University in 1963 and received a master�s degree there in Animal Science in 1967.� John began his Extension career that year in Beaverhead County, a position from which he retired� after 37 years of dedicated service to Montana State University, MSU Extension and the people of Beaverhead County.


As Beaverhead County Extension Agent, Maki has taught generations of ranchers fundamentals in improving reproduction and performance through heifer selection.� He is particularly known for his role in bringing the Bonsma system for evaluating cattle to the Northwest region.� John Maki is a resource for many in-depth topics from crops to cattle and youth development to adult consumer education.� He repeatedly demonstrated understanding and encouragement in his interaction with clientele.


Spearheading cattle programs, overseeing and facilitating a variety of community projects including weed management strategies, pesticide certification, nutrition and watershed monitoring, show Maki works with all people.


John has received numerous awards, including the Dillon Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, twice receiving the MSU Extension Outstanding Agent of the Year Award, and his national association�s Distinguished Service Award and Search for Excellence Award.


For these and many other reasons, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon John Maki the status of Professor Emeritus of Extension at Montana State University-Bozeman and thanks him for his outstanding service to Montana.
